REVIEW:

What is the intellectual merit of the proposed activity?

This proposal seeks to enhance interest in STEM areas through partnership between local elementary schools and their local community college. College students majoring in STEM disciplines will serve as a Science team leader who will regularly schedule activities such as in-class hands-on activities, robot competition, and Lego league competition.

This proposal has many merits. College STEM students will bring new energy to the school, elementary school students will feel more close to the college students and comfortable in asking questions. The Lego and robot competitions they propose will certainly excite students in learning. College STEM students will become the role model for the young students.

What are the broader impacts of the proposed activity?

The proposed activities could be and should be implemented in all communities throughout this entire country. If NSF has to support only one project to improve the STEM education, this project should be the one. And the similar project involving collaborative team work among local elementary schools, colleges, and industry should be adopted by every community throughout the country.

Summary Statement

Although the proposal is written in very succinct mode and does not seem to have academic depth, it has the best merit with minimum cost. My only wish is to expand the project into the summer time when more college students and elementary students can do more STEM activities. Of course, it will require bigger budget including the PI and college students stipend, which I think the NSF will be happy to support.

The budget is minimum, and the project should be funded.
