Introduction to Magnetism
1.
Class Activity I
Part I. Magnets
Bring the north end of a magnet near your
compass and record whether it repels or attracts.
Bring the south end of a magnet near your
compass and record whetner it repels or attracts.
Bring the south end of one magnet to the
north end of another magnet.
Bring the south end of one magnet to the
south end of another magnet.
Record your results.
So, what must the end of the needle of a
compass that points north actually be?
And what must the north pole of the earth
actually be?
Part II. Electromagnets:
Inducing magnetism using current.
Make a coil of wire with the long black
wire in your box.
Attach it to a stand
Connect batteries to it and hold a compass
on one side of the coil and note which way the compass rotates.
Repeat on the other side of the coil.
Reverse the leads on the battery and
repeat.
Try to make up a rule /law about the magnetic field caused by current - make sure you note which way
the current is flowing!
Bring the north end of your magnet near a
paper clip and describe what happens .
Bring the south end of your magnet near a
paper clip and describe what happens.
In terms of your previous experiments,
what must be happening inside the paper clip?
Play around with the coil , Galvanometer,
& magnet. Explain what makes
the galavnometer deflect in the direction it does.
