2. You are riding on a bus when the driver stops suddenly to avoid hitting a pedestrian crossing the street. You notice that everyone standing on the bus suddenly lurches forward when the driver applies the brakes. Knowing what you do about Newton's first law, explain why this happened.



3. According to the manufacturer, a 256 Winchester Magnum cartridge shot by a revolver with an 8-inch barrel results in a bullet with a muzzle speed of 2200 ft/s. Fired horizontally, that bullet drops 0.90 inch after traveling 50 yd, 4.4 inch after 100 yd, and 10.9 inch after 150 yd. Compare these figures with those obtained theoretically (neglecting aerodynamic effects). What's happening?
