The first three questions refer to the material you were to read in preparation for the lesson. Questions one and two require you to write a three or four sentence response. Number three is a multiple choice question. Click in the appropriate circle. Questions 4 is your opportunity to suggest what we should emphasize today and how.

1. Why can you get a more severe burn from steam at 100 degrees C than boiling water at 100 degrees Celcius ?

2. The air temperature above coastal areas is profoundly influenced by the high specific heat of water. One reason is that the thermal energy released during the cooling of 1 cubic meter of water by 1 degree Celcius raises the temperature of an enormously greater volume of air by 1 degree Celcuis. Estimate this volume of air. (The specific heat of air is approximately 1000 J/kg/degree Celcius. Take the density of air to be 1.3 kg/m3.)

3. A piece of hot metal is put into an equal mass of water. The water temperature rises 5 degrees and the metal's temperature drops 10 degrees. What is the specific heat of the metal?

  1. 2 kcal/kg*C
  2. 1 kcal/kg*C.
  3. .5 kcal/kg*C.
  4. Not enough information

4. Below is a space for your thoughts, including general comments about today's assignment (what seemed impossible, what reading didn't make sense, what we should spend class time on, what was "cool", etc.):
